Art Residency – Near Daxi Township in the Mountains (somewhere).

I spent the last two weeks doing an art residency on a farm, 1.5 hours by car from Taipei, with my host Steve Chen, my main art project was to create a large curtain to cover over a storage space for camping gear.

I was given a box full of random pieces of material, collected from around the farm, including sheets, towels, pillow cases and clothes, I happened to have a hot glue gun with me, so I started gluing the pieces together, first just getting the main area created, in my experience it’s best to just start on things, as I find ideas come through doing, especially when I’m doing something new.

Once the main piece was on its way, I measured the space and then worked to fill towards the outer edges, until I had a fabric rectangle, big enough for the space.

Next I cut circles and triangles, which I also glued onto the large rectangle, randomly at first but then my arrangement’s started to relate to the previous shapes already glued, I got hold of a large needle and sewed some stitches into some of the shapes, to add an interesting detail, variety, along with some buttons, and some straight lengths of cut fabric, my idea had become like a “wild garden” with repeating elements, lines between different parts like a fence or path, and I feel the different fabrics, could represent the different plants that occupy each area.

We were happy with the result, I hope it will continue to bring an inquisitive openness to the space, as well as the idea of reusing waste as art, for me it opened up textiles in new way, so am sure I will use them more in my work as they become available.

Thanks for reading, Sam.
